J.S. Ort, LL M. (Bas): Bas studied law in Nijmegen and started working for Zwartbol Advocaten's predeccesor directly after he graduated in 1988. In 1989, Bas set out together with Mr. Zwartbol, after whom Zwartbol Advocaten was named, to set up and lay the foundations for the current firm.

Bas' practice exclusively consists of a national and international contract and trade practice with a large emphasis on the maritime and industrial world. Bas regularly assists a very diverse maritime, industrial and offshore-related clientele:

• Shipbuilding yards: Amongst other things with regard to seagoing vessels, offshore vessels, inland waterway transport, new construction and repairs/conversions;
• Superyacht shipbuilders
• Aircraft manufacturers and aviation
• Offshore companies
• Shipowners
• Industrial companies
• Banking institutes
• Shipshandlers
• Engineering companies
• Maritime suppliers
• Transport companies
• (Steel) Construction companies

The focus in this practce lies on (i) all existing contract types in various stages of drawing up the contract, both national and international, (ii) supervising all conceivable types of discussions and technical problems which occur in this field; Bas Ort's practice lies continuously in the area between law and technology and (iii) advising the entrepreneur with a no-nonsense approach about legal, financial and policy matters with which this entrepreneur is faced on a daily basis. The client's profile is clear: a branch of the Dutch and international manufacturing industry, maritime and offshore, from small to large and international. This practice is mainly in English and very often includes aspects related to international law. Bas Ort speaks, reads and writes English fluently.

Very frequently, Bas is being called upon by his clients to assist in major contract negotiations. Bas' focus on obtaining the client's goal, which usually is to establish the deal, in combination with his positive negotiation skills, even so frequently lead to the desired results in a constructive manner and atmosphere.

Bas is member of the Corporate Litigation Association, of the Netherlands' Association for Maritime and Transport Law and of the ICC Institute of World Business Law. Bas is also member of ICC's Commission on Commercial Law and Practice.

In addition to his law firm, Bas is very active socially and holds various other positions in trade associations and corporate associations, in the financial world, education and as a non-executive supervisor of companies. For this in April 2014, Bas was appointed Knight in the Royal Order of "Oranje Nassau" by His Majesty the King of the Netherlands.

Bas frequently lectures at inhouse courses for clients on topics such as, "(International) Contracting" and "Law and Technology, the world of a lawyer and that of an engineer".
